Do you have guests coming to your house for the holidays? Whether they are visiting for Thanksgiving or arriving later in the holiday season, now is the time to start planning and prepping if you want to show off your holiday style while making your guests feel delightfully indulged.
I used to wait until a few days after Thanksgiving to pull out my Christmas bins, but then I heard about scientific studies showing a correlation between early decorating and increased happiness. That's all the motivation I need to decorate earlier this year! I scoured the internet and created a mood board that pulls together a (sort of) subtle holiday look that can work with a variety of furniture styles from traditional to more contemporary. I've included shopping links below so you can recreate this look in your own home.
BEDDING The key to creating an easy holiday look that can be used year after year is to work with your existing furnishings and swap out decorative elements like bedding, wall art, and floral arrangements with more festive seasonal items. The focal point of any bedroom is usually the bed, so if you can only update one thing in the room, that's where you will get the most bang for your buck. I chose a green velvet quilt and shams layered with festive pine tree sheets, a red and white blanket (to go between the sheets and quilt) and a bright red throw blanket for those extra chilly nights. The surface area of a bed means that even if this is the only decor you change for the holidays, your guests will get a substantial dose of red and green Christmas spirit.
WALL ART Art can be expensive, but a pastel floral painting just won't match the mood in a Christmas room. I would swap out spring/summer art with this wintery pine image and large snowflake trio. It's worth noting that the snowflakes are much larger than you might expect, so make sure you have a wall area large enough to fit them before purchasing these.
DECORATIVE ACCENTS Decorative accent pieces are like jewelry for a room. Use treasured items you already own, or order the groupings shown here if you are starting from scratch. For a nightstand or dresser, I like the combination of this Olive Fig Retreat candle, a small lit frosted faux pine tree, and this beautiful wooden advent calendar. Imagine your guests joy when they peek inside the doors and find chocolates or other small surprises during their visit.
For the bed, I chose a pine tree throw pillow that mimics the pine theme in the wall art and bed sheets. I also couldn't resist this throw pillow in the shape of a fluffy stuffed dog with antlers. My inner child loves all things fluff and fur! Pottery Barn has a big selection of cute, childlike holiday pillows this year, so if fluffy dogs aren't your thing, check out their gingerbread family, snowman, and other options to find the one that your own inner child loves most.
WINDOWS AND FLOORS Depending on how your room is decorated the rest of the year, you may or may not be able to blend your holiday look with your existing curtains and rug. If the colors and patterns are just too bright and summery to transition into winter, there are some surprisingly affordable rugs and curtains that you can swap in for the cooler months. This European linen blackout curtain in cream and this winter white neutral rug can be used with a variety of decorative styles from September through March and beyond. Last but not least, a cozy sheepskin rug next to the bed will help warm your guests toes when they get out of bed in the morning.
Come January, you can still keep the winter mood going by removing the advent calendar, Christmas themed sheets, red blankets, and tree, while keeping all of the green and white elements until the arrival of spring.
The TOTAL COST for all of the pieces shown here, not including tax and shipping, comes to $2487.15. That includes queen size bedding, 96" long curtain panels, and an 8x10 rug. Prices may vary depending on the size of your room and furniture. But with so many pre-season sales starting now, you can surely snag better deals on all of these items by signing up for sale alerts on websites like Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
